Two weeks down, way to go! This week in class (aka today) we discussed;

The Characteristics of Research
What All Communication Scholars have in Common
The Model of Communication Research
Different Paradigms (Naturalists v. Positivists)

For Posting; I want you to develop a research question and discuss how both positivists and naturalists might study the same question. For example;

I want to study the influence of slasher films (sweet horror movies) on males aggressive behavior. The Positivists would use an experiment. They would bring men into a lab and let half of them watch hours of slasher films and the other half to watch stand up comedy. Then I would allow all of them to pick different video games to play. If slasher films do influence violence, then those who watched those movies should pick more violent video games to play than those who watched the comedians.
The naturalist would visit fan webpages of slasher films and attempt to chat with individuals. They would ask questions about their aggressive feelings after watching films. Because naturalists believe in multiple realities, an experiment would not work because you need to understand the reality of each individual.

I know this a tough one gang, give it a shot. As long as effort is there, full credit.

I want to study Medical Doctors and their reactions to sales people. A Naturalist would probably visit a clinic and watch the doctor while they are in meetings with various sales reps thus showing how a doctor would react in his own environment. A Positivist would want the doctors in a controlled place where only certain types of sales reps with specific products in mind can speak with the doctor, and afterward depending on what the doctor decides to go with, will determine how the doctor felt about each rep and product.

I want to study how people deal with rejection, for example rejection from a perspective employer. A positivist may set up interviews and advertise them, go through the interviews and tell the interviewees they didnt get the job. Then they would ask the interviewee to report on their emotions. A naturalists may visit "real" job interviews that they find in the paper and observe peoples reactions as they get out of the interview, and maybe discuss it with the interviewee, but they would go to multiple job interviews.

A good study, in my opinion, would be to see how girls would/will interact with one another while living in college.

Naturalist: Would try to view the women living together on a day to day basis over an extended period of time. They would view the women in the house, maybe during specific times or day, or even set up cameras. Cameras would be a great idea. This way the women would forget that anyone is watching them, and act as normal as possible. On the other hand, they would also have to try to view people in an unnatural setting, so that their information would be too biased.

Positivists: Would try to be unbiased with the research, so they would most likely use a variety of surveys to help them. The experiment would be controlled by the types of questions and who they would be distributed to.

I want to study how sales representative deal with irate customers. A positivist would set up a mock situation with an actor or assistant in a controlled environment. They would then set up a survey of some sort for the representative to fill out. A Naturalist would probably go to the store of the representative and observe them with customers over a period of time.

I would like to study the effects of quitting cigarette use on longtime users. A positivst would bring a group of cigarette users into a lab and view their interactions before quitting, and then again 24 hours after they haven't had a cigarette. A naturalist would interact with cigarette users in the real world. They would then find users who were trying to quit and keep interacting with them after they have decided to quit and view how they act.

I would study the effect that music has on a woman's mood for the day. I would have two groups of about 5 women. One group would listen to upbeat pop music, while the other would listen to metal. Each group would listen to its specific type of music for 20 minutes.

A positivist would probably have the group be in the same room like a lab in order to have a controlled setting. They would try to make it as unbiased as possible. This way there would only be the music and the women, no distractions.

A naturalist might try a more natural setting such as the woman's house or maybe while she was driving her car. This approach is more biased. It would be tough to conclude the woman's mood of the day because it all depends on her taste in music.

I want to study which sex group likes which sport the best. I would pick a large group of both sexes about 50 each. Then i would set up 5 different sporting events ranging from playing football to shooting pool. The five events in a postivists control group would be monitored telling the groups of sexes to go to one sporting event to the next, and then writing down how long they played for, and what sport they liked the most. As for the naturalists control setting they would just set up the five different sporting events where ever and just sit back and observe which events were liked the most by each group as the groups would randomly start playing a sport.

I would want to study the influence of sport results on males behavior.

Positivists would conduct this study by using an experiment. They would bring in 20 die hard male fans of a certain team and have half of them watch a game in which this team loses, and the other half watch the team win. After, positivists would interview each male focusing questions on the males mood.

Naturalists would chose to conduct this experiment from the males own homes, or in a sports bar. After the games ended, naturalists would then observe the males for an hour and so to see if the males moods change or correlate to the team winning or losing.

I would want to study how divorce affects children. A naturalist would find families that were going through divorce and ask the children what they were feeling as the process continued. The study would probably take years to complete as children move into adulthood. A positivist would take samples of adults who's parents went through a divorce as a child, and interview them or give them a survey focusing on different aspects of their childhood and then gather information that way.

I would like to study how a “true” healthy diet affects ones mental state.
Healthy diet defined as all natural foods for two weeks – no processed food, no fast foods. Lean meats would be part of the diet. Most people are addicted to sugar (carbohydrates). This study would be comparable to asking someone to quit smoking.

Positivists:
Would bring the subjects into a cafeteria/lab and observe their behavior before and after the two-week period. Noting their state of mind, behavior and attitude, as well as their energy levels.

Naturalist:
Would interact with the individuals as they went through their daily routine: at home, in the office and in social settings. Noting how they interacted with their spouse, family and friends. The research would observer the subjects level of energy throughout the day.

One of the studies that drives the attention of both naturalists and positivists is the study of small group communication in professional domains. The two parties have one common theme they want to discover; how a small group communicates. Positivists would certainly adopt the qualitative method, so they would go about designing a questionnaire and have the latter distributed to the members within that small group they’re intending to study. On the other hand, the naturalist folks would certainly conduct a qualitative research by, say having a researcher present during the times where the small group interacts with each other. Because naturalists believe in multiple realities, they would interpret information from a personal voice depending more on induction than deduction.

My study would be about how children in kindergarten effect eachother in the behavioral sense. (ex: if a child is raised to be mean and rude, will they rub off on a polite and innocent child)

A positivist would concentrate on one kindergarten class at a particular school. They would most likely pair a "bad egg" with a "good egg" and watch them for a period of time (say a year) while recording behavior changes and then determine the difference in the end.

A naturalist would maybe just do a bunch of kindergarteners interacting (not just limited down to a specific classroom) and they wouldn't worry about pairing them up, but would likely just watch to see if the polite children stuck together or if they let the bad children into their friend circle. That would be the only way to see if there were any behavior changes.

I want to study how football lovers can include woman and not just the average man. From a positivists standpoint, researchers will divide men and woman up in groups while introducing football on television to each group. While researchers watch both groups, they pay close attention on how advanced both groups know the game, lingo, and positions of players. From a naturalists standpoint researchers will become one with both groups asking them questions about sports and how they feel about football. This experiment will not work because naturalist believe in multiple realities. The focus should just be about each individuals feelings.

I would study if brand names affect what clothes people buy regardless of the quality.

A POSITIVIST would control the setting by rigging a name brand store with poorly made clothes that still were labeled with the expensive name brand. They would have cash register's records of all of the decoys that were purchased vs. the unlabeled namebrands. They would deduce that if people bought more of the decoys, it was merely because they were hung up on name brands.

NATURALISTS would give surveys rigging questions toward quality standards and how much trust people have in different clothing lines. The results would produce many more answers, such as faith in product line, superficiality, and aesthetic appeal. It would be discussed in a personal voice.

I want to study if shopping with an empty stomach really causes people to spend more money at the grocery store. Naturlists would go to the store and seperate people who were hungry from people who had recently had something to eat and observe what they purchased after checking out. Positivists would want to perform a survey and interview with hungry and non-hungry people in a controlled setting and ask what they thought they were likely to spend on food when shopping on a full or empty stomach.

I would like to study the effects that media (Ex: tv shows, magazine advertisements, celebrities in the news) has on teenagers/young adults over and extended period of time.
I would use a group of 50-100 teenagers ranging from 13-19 in age.
A positivist would bring the group of adolescents into a room or a controlled setting and show them magazine articles, advertisements and tv shows. They would probably then give the teens a series of surveys and ask them to answer how they feel about the media and if it influences them and their decisions. This would be and unbiased way to make conclusions.
A naturalist would probably go out and observe teens/young adults in their own environment with their own surroundings and observe how the teens react in response to what they see in the media over a period of time. It would be tough to conclude this way because teens always act differently when they are with their peers in their own setting.

First off I would like to state that the study of if someone would purchase more groceries on an empty stomach compared to if you're not hungry would be a very interesting study, because I have thought of that myself.

I would like to study about whether or not someone's relationship their siblings affect their interpersonal communication with others.

Naturalists would get a random sample of 100 people who have siblings and set them in a room where there would be a one sided mirror. They would study each individual and their actions with the others in a room. Since there's no single truth according to the naturalists, they would examine each individual and state the reason why each individual acted a certain way.

Positivists would set up an experiment where they would set up a survey asking 200 people with siblings. The questions would be pertaining to their interactions with other people on an everyday basis. They would include relationhips, scenerios, and overall feelings about people. If the majority of them were more private then the positivists would feel that having siblings don't help in building relationships, but if the majority of them enjoyed interacting with people and were outgoing, then the positivists would assess that having siblings benefit in interperonal communication.

I would do a study on how many hours an individual spends on the internet over a month long period.

A positivist would have the sample of individuals in a controlled setting while giving them different surveys- asking them at what times out of the day do they use the internet and for how long. This way it will be unbiased research.

A naturalist would see how the individuals use the computer in their natural environment. They might set up cameras in the house to see the people using the internet first hand. This approach is more biased.

I would want to study if shopping with someone elses money really causes people to spend money more carelessly. Positivists would do a survey and ask people in a controlled setting how they would spend money whether it's their money or someone elses. Naturalists would take shoppers and divide them into people with their own money to spend and people who had others money to spend and see how loosely they would spend the money.

I want to study anti-drug and drinking advertisements versus smoking and alcoholic beverage advertisements, to audiences between the ages of 18-25, and see which advertisements have the most affect on their audience and how.
A positivist would select people within the target range (18-25) from a variety of backgrounds and equal gender. They would have a controlled setting environment(carefully selected advertisements from each category) and view the reactions each person has to the advertisements shown.
A naturalist would probably visit the advertisers who control the advertisements, and see firsthand how they come up with their ideas and study their strategies. They would also go out in the real world and see firsthand how the public reacts to these advertisements because of the natural setting and natural reactions.

I want to study the effect of being home schooled has on kids vs attending a public school.
A Naturalist would visit and study kids in both settings. They would see how kids act in a home schooled environment, and then they would study kids who attend public schools to see how they act.
The Positivists would send out surveys to children who both are home schooled and who attend public schools and get each of their opinions.

I would really like to study how people would act under the double blind effect by having a keg party with O’Doul’s beer. Then record how the people act then the next week have a party with actual beer, but not tell any of the party goers. This might not sound appropriate but i always wanted to try this.

The naturalist would want to try this experiment multiple times and watch the reactions. They would want to have the party at the same place most likely. Also they would want to see the people outside of the party setting to see how they act normally.

The positivists would be taking notes on the numbers of people who are acting drunk. They would do an experiment to see how many people admit that they are actually drunk.

My programmer is trying to persuade me to move

But he's tryiong none the less. I've been using Movable-type on several websites
for about a year and am nervous about switching
to another platform. I have heard excellent things
about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can transfer all my wordpress
