Hey class,
This week in class we discussed;

For posting this week, let's continue to work on our conceptual and operational definitions. I would like you to pose a question of a relationship between two variables. Then give conceptual and operational definitions for both variables.

Ex- Due to the problem solving needed in modern video games, gamers are more likely to excel in mathematical skills than non gamers.
Variable 1- Gamers
Conceptual- Individuals who engage in the act of playing electronically simulated games  
Operational- Individuals who admit to playing an average of 5 or more hours a week of video games on any platform

Variable 2- Mathematical skills
Conceptual- The comprehension of the logical nature and structure of geometry, logic, probability, algebra, and statistics.
Operational- Any individual who scored above 650 on the mathematics section of the SAT or 19 on the ACT's

Due to the nature of sports/athletics and the comradery and skills that you acquire by participing, athletes are more likely to excell in group work and working with teams.

Variable 1: Athletes

Conceptual: Individuals who play or have played a competivive sport

Operational: Individuals who recieved atleast one varsity letter in highschool

Variable 2: Working in teams

Conceptual: Anything that involves working in teams or as a "unit" to achieve a certain desired outcome

Operational: Working with 2 or more people in a company to achieve a goal

Due to the high fat in fast food, people who eat fast food often are more likely to be obese.

Variable 1: Eating at fast food restaurants

Conceptual: People who regularly eat at fast food restaurants

Operational: People who admit to eating at a fast food restaurant at least twice a week

Variable 2: Obesity

Conceptual: People who look overweight

Operational: People who have a BMI (Body mass index) of 30 or more

Due to the nature of college course work and the complexity of class material, students who attend classes and pay attention in class do better on exams and class work than those students who do not attend and pay attention in class.

Variable 1: Students

Conceptual: Students who either attend or not attend class regularly

Operational: Students who are enrolled in the class and attendence is kept.

Variable 2: Doing well in coursework

Conceptual: Coursework involves exams and homework such as papers, worksheets, presentations.

Operational: Comparing the class sessions attended with good grades in the class.

Individuals who watch the news everyday have a higher tendency to be more frightened of the outside world, then individuals who do not watch the news.

Variable 1: TV viewers

Conceptual: Individuals who watch the news


Operational: Individuals who just turn on the TV and go on with their everyday activity.

Variable 2: The outside world

Conceptual: Everyone and everything outside of the viewers home and security.

Operational: The scary things that happen within the views town.

Due two the vast amount of information on the world wide web people who use the internet to search for information are find more results than those who don't.

Variable 1: people who use the internet as a resource

Conceptional: Individuals who search for specific information

Operational: Individuals who aimlessly search the web.

Variable 2:People who use other methods than the internet to search for information

Conceptiona: All of the information and research that is not listed on the internet.

Operational: Compare findings/research with the internet users

Due to the violence in video games, kids between the ages of 8-17 will be more hostile to friends and family.

Variable 1: Gamers between the ages of 8-17

Conceptual: Gamers who engage in violent video game usage.

Operational: Gamers who play ONLY video games that involve violent activity.

Variable 2: Violent Behavior

Conceptual: Behavior that involves physical violence.

Operational: Behavior that involves physical contact or injury.

TV viewers who watch entertainment news shows as opposed to traditional news sources are less politically knowledgeable.

Variable 1: Type of news program (entertainment news vs. Traditional)

conceptual- A type of news program that makes you laugh while you get your current events or a more srious program designed to be informative

operational- The daily show with John Stewart/ MSNBC Nightly news

Variable 2: Political knowledge

conceptual- how much you know about what is going on in politics

operational- Ability to at least name key political figures and awareness of their role in current politics
