Great work in class today. I'm really impressed on how well you all did on the "what's wrong with this research" exercise. You already seem to be critical thinkers, and this will help with the material covered in this semester. As a re-cap, here is what we covered today;

Faulty research presented in the mass media
Epistemologies (Personal Experience, Intuition, Authority, Tradition-Custom-Faith, & Magic-Superstition)
Two different types of research (Propriety & Scholarly)

Question for thought (remember to type your name after your response);
For posting, I want you to think about the different epistemologies we learned. Give me an example of how you learned something incorrectly because of using an epistemology.
For example: I once learned through authority that the mayor of Cheektowaga (my home town) lived in this huge mansion on Clinton St. My older brother was a figure of authority, and he told me so. When I grew older, I learned the building was actually an art museum that people can rent out for private parties. I further learned that Cheektowaga does not even have a mayor. I believed my older brother through authority and was incorrect.

An espistemologie that I learned in class the other day was when I was a senior in high school I hurt my knee and my doctor told me that I tore my ACL, in actuality my knee was only swollen. This was a perfect example of believing my doctor who was the authority figure in this situation.

As a kid, my dad had a motorcycle. I decided that it would be a good idea to see what the engine felt like when it was running. I ended up burning my hand very badly. By my own personal exprience, I have learned not to touch anything that belongs to my dad.

When I was younger my parents told me that swallowing a watermelon seed would cause a watermelon to grow in my stomach. I believed them due to the authority explanation for epistemologies. When I grew older I realized this was not true and they were just trying to give me a reason to not swallow watermelon seeds.

An example of an authoritative epistimology that I remember deals with Kent State. I went to an advising appointment and asked the advisor what classes I NEEDED to take for sure to graduate on time. She told me what she thought so I signed up for those classes. I came to realize that one of the classes that I had signed up for was not needed for my major at all. I believed this advisor because she held greater authority then I did, or so I thought!

This sounds stupid, but I tend to believe in different aspects of astrology, an example of the magic/superstition epistemology. I've sometimes made judgements on people based on what their sign is, and now I've come to admit just how ridiculous and misguided those judgements have been.

My friends cat was starting to weird, and gain weight, so we thought she was pregnant, especially since there were male stray cats coming up to her back door. The vet told us that there was no way she could be pregnant for various reasons, and sent us home. Sure enough the cat had two kittens less than two weeks later. We believed the vet because of her authority, but clearly she was wrong.

If you were of a Moroccan origin, you would certainly know that seeing a raven in the early morning would cause your day to be a complete misfortune. I used to believe in this until the day when I found a sum of money equal to $30 on my way to school in an early morning. That was the same day when I happened to see a black raven. From that day on, I would always disagree with any one trying to convince me of the worth of that old nonsense.

An espistemologie that I can personally relate to is the idea of authority. Last semester one of my roommates and I were both in the same class. We had an assignment due the next day and my roommate and I both had conflicting opinions on what was expected of us. I remember the professor telling us one thing, but my roommate said something else. In the end, I trusted the professor because she was in authority, and it turns out I was right.

The espistemology that stands out the clearest in my mind, from when I was a child ... is my mother trying to calm my brother and I during a thunderstorm. She told us God was bowling and everytime we heard the thunder and lighting that meant God had a strike. She told us to be happy, because God was happy. It didn't take long for my brother and I to realize this was just her way of reassuring us everything was going to be OK.

When Rush Hour came out in the movies, my older sister told me that Chris Tucker was Chris Rock's stage name. Of course this is untrue, but at the time I believed it because in my eyes she was an authority and I just assumed that what I THOUGHT I knew was incorrect.

Every year around my birthday, my hometown has a community wide event called the Balloon-A-Fair. The day starts off with a parade through downtown and ends with a hot air balloon lift off at a nearby horse farm. When I was little, my grandpa would take me to the parade and we would spend the whole day downtown. Since the Balloon-A-Fair always happens within days of my birthday, my grandpa always told me that the whole ordeal was in honor of my birthday. I believed my grandpa because he was an authority figure in my life, and even went so far as to tell my friends in school. Eventually I found out that is was a mere coincidence but my family and I still jokingly refer to it as the "Brianne-A-Fair."

One of my duties at my job is to put discount saving card inquiries into the computer, which consist of someone's name, address, and phone number. Well, when I was being taught how to do this by a lady who has been putting these inquiries in for a long time, I was told to spell out the word "street," and "boulevard." I believed she was teaching me how to put the inquiries in the right way, due to the fact that she was the authority figure. I later learned that I wasn't suppose to spell out the whole word, that I was just suppose to put in the abbreviation.

Personally I lack car part knowledge. I know the basics but not enough to work on them myself. I believe we have all experienced when we go and take our car for a tune up, the mechanic mentions twenty other things that is wrong with our car. Some people would just ignore the mechanic and worry about the serious stuff. But others would trust and believe in the mechanic but well afterall, this is his job. Some people take advantage of this epistemology and use it against people to get their way. I think effective salesman uses the authority epistemology.

One of the epistemologies that I learned in class was tradition, custom and faith. Growing up, my mother and father made us go to church. Not that I did not want to, but I enjoyed everything about church. My parents always told me that God is real, and that he is the only one that can save you from your sins. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Knowing that made me more prone to the faith epistemologie.

I can definitely relate to the tradition/custom/faith epistemology. I was raised in a Catholic family and grew up in Catholic schools. I was always taught to just have faith in God and all of the miracles in life even though one cannot actually see God or have proof that He is with us and that there is a greater place to go to after death which is heaven. I was taught by my parents and teachers that you should just have faith.

When I was little my mom and dad always told me to buckle my seatbelt. They told me if I didn't buckle my seatbelt that the car wouldn't start. So everytime I got into the car I would always buckle it asap because I thought that the car wouldn't start if I didn't. I believed in a higher authority which are my parents, eventhough I now know now that the car would start if my seatbelt wasn't buckled... this is a good example of an espistemologie.

When I was little I, like most kids, believed in Santa Clause. Every year around Christmas time I would get so excited that Santa would be coming to bring me my present, and my parents always told me to leave out milk and cookies for him. Then one year when I was in 5th grade I found out that Santa wasn't real. I didn't want to beleive anybody who told me this because my parents told me he was real. This to me is an example of the authority epistemology since I believed my parents.

As a child I was told by my grandmother that if I continued to make "ugly" faces then my face would eventually stay that way. Since she was my grandmother I believed what she said, and never thought twice about her word.

I just recently learned through a health course that if you swallow gum, it will not stay in your system for 7 years. I believed this my whole life because my parents told me that would happen since i swallowed my gum so much instead of throwing it in the garbage.
