March 7, 2007

Hello all, we covered lots of material this week. Following is a list of the material we covered;
1.) The three ways 2 variables can be related;
Unrelated
Linear
Nonlinear
2.) Correlations
r values indicate direction and strength
rules of thumb for strengths
determining if the correlation is significant
no causation with correlations
3.) Spurious relationships
4.) Two purposes of inferential statistics (estimation and significance testing)
5.) Kurtosis and Skewness
6.) Standard error of the mean
7.) Confidence Level and Confidence Interval
8.) Significance testing of the null hypothesis
9.) Type I & II errors

Question for thought:
In class, we discussed spurious relationships. For discussion, come up with your own. Describe a relationship that appears to exist between two variables and then describe a third variable that really explains the relationship.

The relationship is: the longer a person's hair is, the lower their car insurance is.

The third variable is gender. People with long hair tend to be women, who have lower car insurance rates because we get in fewer accidents.

Relationship: The smaller a person is, the less responsibility they have.

The third variable is age. Smaller people are usually children and usually the younger a person is the less responsibility they have.

Relationship: The older you are, the wiser you are.

There are a number of other variables--education, experience, etc. Being old does not necessarily make you wise; your wisdom is derived from your life experiences and/ or education.

Relationship: Smokers seem to get lower grades than nonsmokers.

Third Variable: Smokers tend to be extroverts rather than introverts. This means they may be out socializing more than they are hitting the books...therefore grades could be lower not because of smoking.

The relationship is: the taller a person is, the better athlete they are.

The third variable is age. When people are older they have reached their maximum height. It is at this point, that they develop into good athletes.

Relationship: Tall people bump their heads a lot.

The third variable is the height of entrances. The lower an entrance is the more likely a tall person is going to bump their head.

Relationship: The higher the status a person holds in a company like CEO for example, the more politically conservative they are.

The third variable is income. The more wealthy people in our country tend to be politically conservative.

The smarter a child is, the more likely he or she is to misbehave in class. The the third variable could be that the kid is bored in class and doesn't feel challenged so he or she finds a way to pass time. Intelligent children doesn't mean poor behavior. If the child was in a class that was challenging to them, they would probably not have to entertain themselves.

The Relationship is: The taller the person is, the better they are at basketball.

The third variable could be many of things, mainly for example: experience. Just because a person is tall does not mean they will be better at the sport then someone who is shorter and has more skill and experience. :)

relationship: The smaller a person is the harder it is to reach things.

Thrid variable will be age. Smaller people who are young will have a tough time reaching things on a higher shelf then people who are older.
