First, in regards to the last blog posting, I'm not sure if everybody hit the nail on the head, so to speak. An example I came up with concerned outliers. Remember in the beginning of the semester when I mentioned how the average salary of the comm grad is very high, something like $60,000. This is a product of using the mean to calculate the average salary. This number is inflated because of the communication department producing extremely high salary careers such as professional athletes and actors. The median would give us a much more accurate account of something like $35,000.
Today, we discussed correlation. Correlation is a statistical test that requires two continuous variables to determine if their is a relationship between the two. For discussion, I want you to come up with your own possible correlations. Pick one variable, and detail how it would be positively correlated with a second variable, and negatively correlated with a third. Explain why you think this is so.

My variable is studying. Studying is positively correlated with better grades. While studying is going up, so are your grades making this a positive correlation. On the other hand, studying is negatively corrlelated with partying because the more you party, the less time you have to study, and therefore, the worse grades you most likely receive. While partying is going up, study time is going down making this a negative correlation.

My variable is World or Warcraft (WOW). Being dumped by a girlfriend could be a positively correclated with WOW. The more you play wow, the more likely you get dumped by your girlfriend. The more time you spend away from the real world the more angry your girlfriend will get until she can't take it anymore. Grades can be a negative correlation with WOW. The more you play wow, the less time you have for studying, and the lower your grades will get, until you drop out of college.
Bottom Line: Don't become obsessed with WOW!!!

My variable is exercising and eating well balanced meals. Exercising daily and eating well balanced meals is positively correlated with better health. While exercising on a daily basis is boosting self-esteem, you're improving optimum health. On the other hand, not working out on a daily basis and eating a well balanced meal and opting for a high fat diet is negatively correltated with poor health, low self esteem, high cholesterol and other health risks. So, the more you work out and eat a healthy diet, your overall health perception goes up. While eating poorly, not exercising daily, your overall health diminishes, resulting in serious health factors (risks).

The first variable I have chosen is leadership and it has a positive correlation with involvement. Strong leaders tend to be those who get involved on campus, at their job, in the community etc.. thus a postive correlation between the two. A third variable that could have a negative correlation would be free/personal time. Leaders are always involved and so the time that they have for themselves becomes limited. Being an active leader can be stressful and overwhelming because of the fact that they have minimal time to do things that they enjoy.

The first variable is "cups of coffee drank". It positively correlates with "alertness level" because thats what caffeine tends to do, raise your alertness among other things. It would relate negatively with "hours of sleep" as caffeine is a stimulant, and people who don't sleep a lot are likely to consume coffee in greater quantity.

The first variable is shots taken at the bar. This would positivly correlate with inotoxication levels. The more shots you take the more intoxicated you get. The negative correlation to this would be the more shots you take at the the less control of your motor skills you have.

My variable would be having sex. If an individual is having regular sex (which would have to be defined) and they feel good, this could be a positive correlation. More sex, more happiness. If, on the other hand, more sex leads to a bad reputation, happiness could decrease instead of increase. Thus a negative correlation.

My variable would be the amount of time watching television. Watching television and free time would have a positive correlation since as free time increases, the amount of time watching television would increase. Conversely, as free time decreased so would time watching television. Watching television and homework would have a negative correlation. As homework increases, the amount of time watching television would decrease. But when homework decreases television time would increase.

The variable that I am going to use is positive correlation. The more children watch television or play video games the less out door activities and exercise will take place.

My correlation has to do with friendship. The more friends you have the more social you are. Being more social would also make someone more happy (or at least one would think). That would be a positive correlation. However, having more friends also creates conflicts and is hard to spread out time evenly between all the friends. This would be a negative correlation to having more friends, having more conflicts.

My variable is music. Music is positively correlated with happiness. The more you listen to music the better you will feel. Now on the other hand if your in a bad mode and listen to a very hard song your happiness will decrease there for causing a negative correlation.

My variable is reviewing notes before an exam. Reviewing notes is positively correlated with getting a better grade on the exam. The more notes you have and the more you study them the better grade. Not reviewing your notes is negatively correlated with a worse grade on an exam. Less notes or not reviewing grade goes down.

My variable is getting involved on campus. The more a new student gets involved in life on campus, the more they get out of their time in college. Getting involved could simply be getting a group together to hit the bars. The positive correlation is that you make friends and have fun. The negative correlation is that you could fall behind in your classes and get too caught up in having fun.
